Why I Love Being A Mental Health Therapist

When you’re a kid, you fantasize about your job as an adult. Kids want to be astronauts, superheroes, doctors, whatever they’ve recently seen in a movie or show. It takes awhile to figure out what you want to be when you grow up that seems realistic . Some people spend a lot of time trying on different careers in their head and eventually, in what they study and what jobs they have. I was drawn to being a mental health therapist.

Hello!

I can’t remember exactly when I knew I wanted to be a mental health therapist. I just knew I loved watching tv shows obsessively and loved learning about the characters. Making a career out of being a tv watcher wasn’t going to be an easy path, so I really thought about why I connected with shows so much. I loved seeing story about people, watching their growth, understanding why they did what they did. Somewhere along the way, that turned into me wanting to be a therapist. Once I got into this career, it was like a glove. It fit me right away and it was amazing to connect with this path.

There are so many things I love about being a therapist, but I’m going to focus on a few of the best ones below:

Diversity and New Experiences

I really love meeting people from all different walks of life. Growing up in Miami, I was exposed to people from multiple cultures. But in the jobs I have had, I’ve been able to meet even more people. It’s amazing to learn about different cultures, personalities, jobs, ways of thinking, etc. I don’t know of any other job where one person is exposed to so many different people on such a personal level. I am always open to learning about others and what makes them unique.

See The Best in People

Oftentimes, it feels like the media can focus a lot on the bad in the world. Have you seen anything good on the news recently? It tends to be all about the terrible things that are happening, with a positive story or two in there somewhere. I love finding the best in people, especially those individuals who struggle with seeing their own strengths. I am all about cheering you on when you’re making strides in your life. It doesn’t matter how big or small those steps may seem. Progress is progress!

Amazing Progress

Speaking of progress, it is amazing to see someone come into therapy for the first time and be hesitant about the process. Then, a few months later, they come into sessions feeling more comfortable and start really making progress. I often help clients see what their progress is when they’re having a hard time acknowledging the positive changes they have made. It’s so rewarding!

Building Strength Over Time

I LOVE helping people clarify where they need boundaries and help them on their path towards creating them. It is so amazing to have a client come in after working together for awhile and hear them talk about how they stood up for themselves. It’s awesome to see people empowering themselves.

Therapy is Life Changing

It is rare to find a career that really fits with who you are as a person. I am lucky that I am able to have that as an anxiety therapist and I hope that it shows to my clients. Therapy can be a great resource for so many people and I feel privileged to help people in any way on their journey to become their best selves. It’s exciting to see people work towards and achieve their goals!
